Anyone who visits throughout the week will see that New Cross Gate crown post office is well-used and is an essential resource for the full range of people in our community. It is particularly vital for vulnerable people with limited mobility including pensioners. Our crown post office is equipped with the full range of services that we would otherwise have to travel miles to access such as Home Office Biometric Enrolment.
Since starting the campaign, I’ve found a real strength of feeling in the area. We lost the (Barclays) bank on the same junction and this leaves the post office as the only banking services in the whole of SE14. Now Coral the bookmakers are planning to move into the old bank building and the whole of post office square is going to become a no-go area with the antisocial behaviour a bookies brings if the only community amenity closes.
New Cross Gate is a strong community but we have many challenges holding it together while straddling two A roads. The immediate area is one of multiple high deprivation, and is in the 10% worst rated for the living environment. New Cross’s population is projected to grow 12.4% between 2013 and 2018 – we need more services, not less. We’re determined to make our area a better place to live and grow up with more community amenities, events and improvements to the environment. Saving our post office is just the start.
